Contribuţii la cunoaşterea speciilor de animale domestice de la Porolissum. Studiu preliminar asupra urmelor de animale impregnate pe ţigle şi cărămizi cu privire specială asupra celor de câine

  • Subiect: DOMESTIC ANIMALS AT POROLISSUM. A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE BASIS OF ANIMAL FOOTPRINTS ON BRICKS AND TILES The analysis of animal footprints left on various objects constitutes a new way of study the species of domestic animals from the Roman world. Such an approach constitutes an alternative to the classical way of study based on literary sources, representations on various monuments and archaeozoological analyses. The interpretation of such footprints, usually lefi by the hind limbs gave the name to a new auxiliary science called ichnology. The author of the present paper has analyse many such footprints left on bricks and tiles and on the basis of these analyses he is trying to establish the species of domestic animals which had lived at Porolissum (Dacia Porolissensis, today a monument on the territory of Moigrad village, Mirşid commune, Sălaj county). An inventory of the then existing species in this archaeological site had already been made on the basis of archaeozoological analyses (Gudea 2002, 2003). The present paper confirms the obtained results. In addition to the identification of various species, the author is trying to make a morphological characterization of the most frequently represented species- the dog.
