Venus de la Gilău. Aspecte de iconografie romană provincială

  • Subiect: Venus from Gilău. Aspects of roman provincial iconography On the occasion of archaeological excavations made in the Roman camp in Gilău (the district of Cluj; situated at 16 km's distance in the west of Cluj-Napoca) a splendid bronze statuette 14 cm high was uncharted among other archaeological objects. This sculpture represents the goddess Venus (Fig. 1-1 d) and it is included in the iconographic type of Venus „pudica” nude, having her right hand stretched out. There are analogies of this type in Dacia, for example, the famous "Venus from Potaissa" and „Venus Ulpiana” and in other provinces the Venus goddesses from Zaklopal:a (Fig. 2 a-b) and Gorsium (Fig. 3-3 c).
