Privirea lui Matei Basarab către Europa Orientală

  • Subiect: Matei Basarab’s Orientation Towards The Eastern Europe The voivode Matei Basarab (1632-1654), one of the most important figures of the 17th century in Wallachia, was focused on Argeş & Muscel as main support in practicing his power . Here he had a strong church and faithful boyars he could rely on. Other basis for his approach were represented by the population of the cities, especially that of Piteşti, who began to emancipate, as well as a strong agricultural basis capable to sustain the economy. From here he began to orient his policy toward the Eastern Europe. He oriented toward that side of Europe because he had been disappointed by the attitude of the Western Europe towards him.
