Mănăstirea Harba de lângă Baia Mare, în sprijinul lui Mihai Viteazul

  • Subiect: The Habra Monastery Near Baia Mare Helped Michael the Brave The paper refers to Bishop Efrem of Habru (from Habru Monastery of Habra, situated at 7 km South of Baia Mare), who attended the conclave of the Greek-Orthodox Church of Moldavia, held in Suceava in June 2nd 1600. The conclave decided to support Michael the Brave - the first Romanian ruler who unified Vallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia under the same scepter- in his actions. After the assassination of Michael the Brave (in 1601), the clergy from Habra suffered the reprisals of their involvement. The priests and monks were persecuted by the nobility, their belongings (an important fortune), were confiscated by a nobleman and the walls of the monastery were pulled down. By 1606 the site was a ruin. The Romanian leaders of the communities from Baia Mare, Chioar and Sătmar repeatedly petitioned the Austrian authorities asking for justice with regard to the Habra Monastery and for their approval to rebuild it. But the petitions remained unanswered. The memory of the monastery has been preserved for 400 years both by historical documents and by an interesting legend which made the site a destination for pilgrimage. The monastery was reestablished in 1996 as a nunnery, under the name of The Resurrection. In memory of Michael the Brave the monastery was given a second name: The Saints Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Bishop Efrem, Michael the Brave and his family are commemorated here at every Mass. The building of the site is still in progress. In August this year Michael the Braveis death was commemorated and a bronze sculpture representing the martyrs head was placed next to the monastery. The work of art is signed by the sculptor loan Marchiş.
