Ctitoriile ecleziastice ale lui Matei Basarab şi Vasile Lupu

  • Subiect: The reigns of prince Matei Basarab in Valachia and prince Vasile Lupu in Moldavia represented a progress in terms of culture. During their reigns, many monasteries have been rebuilt, constructed, expanded or consolidated. Matei Basarab was named by C.C. Giurescu the most important builder of churches, after Stefan the Great. The most important monasteries built during his reign are Sadova, Amota, Plătăresti, Topolniţa, Măxineni, Strehaia, Soveja, Negoieşti. Contemporary with Matei Basarab, the prince of Moldavia Vasile Lupu built many monasteries, the most important being Trei Ierarhi, Galia, Hlinca. Although they reigned in a period of time when the Otoman Empire strictly controlled the territory from the north of the Danube, the two princes have contributed significantly to the development of Romanian art and culture.
