Organizarea internă a aşezărilor vicane din Dacia (III) Therme

  • Subiect: THE INTERNAL ORGANISATION OF THE ROMAN VICI IN DACIA (III). THERMAE A characteristic element in the organisation of the defensive system of the Roman Dacia is the concentration of a larger number of auxiliary troops in the same place, in one or more camps. We should notice especially the fortifications on the western line of the province (Micia, Porolissum, Tibiscum). Recently, F. Marcu and O. Tentea, in a communication at the last Roman Frontiers Congress in Pecs (Hungary) presented more double fortifications from Roman Dacia, situated in the same place (as Arcidava-Varadia, Romula, Porolissum, Bumbesti). How is this military organisation, situated in the most strategic points, reflected in the civil organisation of the territory of the Roman viei? In 2003 D. Benea advanced the theory that for a large fortification with more garrison troops we should assume that the military vicus consisted of the communities related to those troops. How does this situation appear on the field? As a unitary, compact agglomeration, or, on the contrary, as distinct settlements representing the civil communities of each troop? A certain analysis is more difficult due to the lack of large researches in the viei. The first argument in sustaining the existence of more settlements in some military systems could be offered by the number of the military bathing complexes known in a site. Which means that each troop had its own bathing house. This thing looks rather difficult to believe. Such a system is not to be found in other provinces, but we should mention that in no province appears such a concentration of regular troops in the same place as in Dacia.
