Ioan Popiliu (1851-1918)

  • Subiect: Ioan Popiliu (1851-1918) The paper presents the life and activity of a forgotten poet from the region of Sălaj. Horn in 1851 in the family of the Greek-Catholic priest Vasile Pop and of his wife Maria Nistea, in the village of Cehal near by Tăşnad (Satu Mare County), Ioan was named Popiliu by h.is schoolmaster in order to distinguish him from other pupils bearing the name Pop. After finishing the primary school, he attended the secondary school in Beiuş between 1865 and 1873 and then studied theology in Budapest. Being ordained in 1877, he preached first in the villages of Sig, Vilcău and then in Marca, where he remained for 41 years. During his studies, I. Popiliu assimilated a remarkable humanist culture which was completed throughout all his life. His writings have a critical and obviously moralizing character. Intending his ideas to be more convincing, he appeals to arguments offered by his earlier studies, frequently quoting from the works of outstanding authors like Diogenes, Aesop, Horatio, Ovid, Pitagoras, Seneca and others. The folklore was one of the writer's concerns, too. As early as in his youth, he was greatly interested in folk literature. Unfortunately, his rich folklore collection referred to in some publications of that time has not been preserved. Among the readers of Transylvania, Popiliu had a good name as satirical poet at a time when Romanian literary manifestations were hindered by the authorities. This state of affairs forced some gifted writers to look for more auspicious conditions beyond the Carpathians. In this way, I. Popiliu, together with other writers, contributed, with his modest means, to answer to his contemporaries' thirst for culture and at the same time to keep alive the national conscience of the Romanians of Transylvania, living under oppression. The author of the poem „Părinţii patriei” (The Father of the Homeland) - the most extensive and important of his works - can he viewed as a forerunner of the later struggle that finally led to the Great Union in 1918.
