Restaurarea unui colţar săsesc din secolul al XVIII-lea

  • Subiect: 1. Historical background ln Transylvania the hundreds of years of common history of Romanians, Saxons, and Hungarians led to a specific cultural background that has as main feature a high levei of cultural and economica! establishment. ln the 18th century the influence of the European Baroque and Rococo caused also in Transylvania the development of the handicrafts and the furniture painting reaches a maximum levei of harmony and equilibrium. The Saxon corner cupboard (Eckschrauk) known under the name of „Cornurar" (in Romanian) was first used in urban residences for arranging the liturgica! vessels. 2. Description, conservation and restoration works The corner cupboard is made of fir wood, has pentagonal shape, being decorated with fretwork elements. lt is painted with architectonic and floral motifs on a marble-like background. The object had degradated structure and painting. The scientific investigations emphasized the attack of xylophagous insects that led to the degradation of the wooden structure. The gound and the pigment used were also identified and the tests a Iso conducted to the establishment of the optimum solvent combination necessary cleaning the structure and the painting. The restoration works consisted in: preventive care of the painting, disinsection and also the consolidation of the wooden structure, the cleaning and the treatment of the metallic elements, the consolidation and cleaning of the painting, the chromatic integration and the varnishing of the painted surfaces.
