  • Subiect: The author discusses the Oriental and Occidental influences that have marked the social and cultural climate of the Romanian area. During the IIIrd-IXth centuries, Greek, Roman and Christian elements were dominant; the Middle Ages were under a strong Ottoman influence. The relations with Europe (Occident) developed starting with the XVIIth century. The paper present the conjuncture and the beginning of the first high level forms of teaching in Wallachia, linked to the foundation of the "St. Sava" Academy, much influenced by the XVIIth century Occidental teaching.
