"Strolls in Old Corners of Bucharest" . A late reading of a book about Bucharest, published by the "National Publishing House" in 1926

  • TITLU în română: "Plimbări în vechile colţuri ale Bucureştiului". O lectură târzie a unei cărţi despre Bucureşti, publicată de "Editura Naţională" în 1926
  • Subiect: Book review „Strolls in Old Corners of Bucharest" is a Guide of Bucharest published directly in English, by a native British speaker, Ethel Greening, married to a Romanian Admirai, Pantazi, and by a drawing artist, Julieta Theodorini, daughter of a former Mayor of Bucharest, Ion Procope Dumitrescu. The book - containing about eighty pages - was published in Bucharest, by the National Culture Publishing House, in 1926. Besides the general data about the history of the Country and of Bucharest, about the specificity of the Romanian art, we are presented several glamourous "corners" hidden to the foreigners' un-informed eye. The authoresses blend precise data with information on a romantic past full of strange legends, of treasures of beauty lost in fires, wars, and with their own memories and revelations regarding the city. We deal not with a mere enumeration of information, addresses, programs, but with a real book of impressions from a town which - at first glance - might disappoint the Occidentals accustomed with other rhythms and images. The book also contains photographs signed by a well-known artist of the time, I. Berman, and some drawings by Julieta Theodorini. A few advertisements for some Bucharestan firma and institutions from the third decade of the century also bring the contemporary reader some of the epoch glamour.
