Cântare de zarafi în secolele XVIII-XIX folosite în Bucureşti

  • Subiect: Usurers' Balances from the 18th - 19th Centuries, used in Bucharest The commercial life of Bucharest was increasingly growing, during the 18th century - in the first decades, Bucharest had become one of the most important economical centers in South-Eastern Europe. Various goods were brought here by merchants coming from all over the world - Romanian, Greek, Turkish, Armenian, Russian, Dutch tradesmen sold their goods in Bucharestan markets, so that the foreign circulating coins were to be found in great variety. Thibault-Lefebvre mentioned (in his „Etudes diplomatiques sur la Valachie") the presence, in Wallachia, of Austrian, Turkish, sometimes French, British, Italian coins - some in current use in their origin countries, others, out of use. In such conditions, the presence of usurers was of imperative necessity. The article presents the context the Bucharestan usurers' activities were performed in and makes special reference to the items in the collection of the Municipal Museum of Bucharest, connected to the usurers' presence in the life of the town. ln spite of repeated measures undertaken by local rulers, the monetary chaos was not to be eliminated until 1867, when a basis was laid for the formation of the national monetary system.
