Capsule de sigilii romane de la Porolissum

  • Subiect: ROMAN SEAL-BOX UDS FROM POROLISSUM In the present paper the author deal's with a special category of small bronze finds, namely seal box lids. These items with various forms are small boxes in which seals were kept, specially used for closing official documents. So far the author has found 17 such seal box lids. A part of these items had already published but some of them are still unpublished. The author tries to draw up a typology establishing eight types, some of them having several variants (Plate II). He could not give a very close dating, but most of these items were intensely used in the 2nd and 1rd centuries. Almost all the boxes had lids decorated with enamel. For some of the items the author could find close analogies in other provinces of the Roman Empire, especially in Pannonia (Inferior). Their similarity suggests that they might come from a common workshop that had produced enameled bronze items, but it has not been located yet.
