Repertoriul localităţilor din judeţul Sălaj în secolul al XIV-lea

  • Subiect: The index of localities of Sălaj in the 14th century The present paper is a continuation of the one entitled „The index of localities from Sălaj in the 15th century" (Acta Musei Porolissensis, 8, 1984, p. 265-280). The 14th century constitutes a period of unrest caused by the Turkish and Mongol invasions. As far as demographic evolution is concerned the number of people increases up to the 14lh century, when the population decreases owing to the famine, wars and the plague. The same phenomenon is observed in the evolution of localities. In the 14th century there were more localities than in the previous one. Up to the year 1400 in Transylvania there were approx. 3900 villages, market towns and towns attested by documents, while in the 13th century there were mentioned only 1.112. The documentary attestation of the localities raises some problems, as the localities are mentioned only in cases when they are of interest for the landlords. The conscriptions and registers comprise only the tax payer population; not all the documents have been preserved, many were lost during the above mentioned period of unrest, and confusion; in many cases there passed decades or even centuries between the foundation of the settlements and their attestation by documents. The present territory of Sălaj district included three former comitates: Solnocul de Mijloc having 96 permanent localities mentioned in the 14th century documents; Crasna with 55 localities and Chioar with 10 localities. There also existed 31 attested settlements in the 13-14lh centuries which later disappeared and approx. 14 attested localities in the 141h century which disappeared in the same period. In the 14th century the stone fortified towns come into being, having a complex role. On a social plan we witness a permanent struggle between the peasants on the one side and the laic landlords and the clergymen.
