Vasul decorat cu şerpi descoperit la Porolissum (terasa sanctuarelor)

  • Subiect: An earthern crateros decorated with snakes discovered at Porolissum During the 1980 excavations at Porolissum (Moigrad; Sălaj county; Romania), in the province of Dacia Porolissensis, the fragments of a craters were discovered on the so called "temples' areal' in the roman town. They were found in a pit used for disposing of the remains of the sacrifices, near the temple of Liber Pater (building N 2) dated in the 2nd century. The craters was 42 cm high; the diameter of the mouth 32 cm; that of the bottom 14 cm; the maximum diameter 37 cm. It has three handles. On each of them a snake "biting" the rim of the vessel is represented. Under the rim, in the space between the handles, are represented: Liber and Libera (flanked by vine leaves), Pan and Silenos. The discovery of the craters at Porolissum reopens the question of the significance and use of the snake decorated vessels. They were thought to be exclusively connected with the cults of Mithras and Sabasios. As the craters of Porolissum is certainly connected with the cult of Liber Pater, we must conclude that the snake decorated vessels were used for the cult of several different gods and, in this respect, one has to take into consideration the discovery conditions and the religious milieu where the vessel was discovered.
