Raporturile lui George Pop de Băseşti cu Vincenţiu Babeş şi cauza memorandistă. 1891-1892

  • Subiect: The Relations between George Pop de Băseşti and Vicenţiu Babeş and the Memorandum Mouvement (1891-1892) In this paper the author presents a particular but significant aspect of the relationship that existed between George Pop from Băseşti and Vincenţiu Babeş, two eminent representants of the Romanian national movement for Memorandum. Both were representatives of mature generation of the National Party, hardened in the struggle against the dualistic political system (Austro-Hungarian). Both personalities were held in high esteem by their compatriots. In the innovating process, which was a consequence of the radicalization of the political activity by the young generation of the Party, the conduct of the traditional militants could have influenced the success of the movement. Vincenţiu Babeş, becomes the leader of the group of minority opposed to radicalization. ln the period when the relations between the two groups became embittered, the leader of the minority group from Banat (the south-western part of Transylvania) tries to draw on his side his old comrade George Pop from Băseşti (Sălaj - in north western part of Transilvania). But G. Pop from Băseşti had intuited the significance of the innovating process and had broken his ties with the opportunist tactics of Babeş-Mocioni, thus contributing to the success of the Memorandum movement, to the radicalization of the national political struggle of the Romanians against Austro-Hungarian dualism.
