Barabás Miklós, martor al modernizării înaltei societăţi româneşti la începutul secolului al XIX-lea

  • Subiect: The Transylvanian painter Barabás Miklos arrived in Bucharest by the fall of 1831, where he found a society at the peak of changing. Yet, the shift from the Oriental habits and vestments to the Occidental ones was going on difficultly enough, as the great boyars (noblemen) did not find it very easy to give up their marks of authority, visible from a distance and stressing their prestige. Various clothing items, picturesque in aspect and denomination, were accompanied by their wearing sumptuous beards only allowed to be worn by courts men and high officials. In spite of their traditionalism, the presence of the Russian troops, under the supervision of General Pavel Kiseleff imposed the modernization (Occidentalization) of the Romania officials' costumes, during the Organic Regulation period. Hence, all who wanted a position in the Administration, had to shave off the beard and put on the European black dress coat. Barabás Miklos closely observed the changes he recorded with accuracy and humor. His observations have a special documentary value, and his drawings perfectly illustrate his memorialistic notes.
