  • Subiect: Important changes took place the sanitary organization and in the field of sanitary assistance, within the new conditions generated by the development of towns and fairs, due to the increase of commercial exchanges, starting with the 18th century. At the same time, the necessity appeared of fighting cholera, plague, and epidemics. An important stage in the development of health protection was represented by the organization of the sanitary service of the Capital, in 1816, which meant the first form of sanitary organization in Bucharest. The foundation of medical training institutions was necessary, meant to form the medical personnel at a national level. During the l8th century, the barbers were in charge with curing the diseased, applying treatments, maintaining the cleanliness. For centuries, a corporation of barber surgeons bas been functioning alongside with that of the doctors' and under their survey, due to the tradition which was maintained up to the modem epoch. Barbers were, thus, supposed to get used to their status of auxiliary servants of Hippocrates.
