În căutarea unor rădăcini inexistente. Arheologia identităţii în romanul postmodernist englez

  • Subiect: In the last thirty years many conflicts between tradition and modernity have been accumulating in England. The main causes of these are mostly economic, and the consequences are without any exception ethno-cultural. The English intellectual elite have to reconsider their national history, its system of values, and the postmodern literature of novels seems to be the best means for this. After Salman Rushdie’s and Vidiadhur S. Naipaul’s internationally recognized works the process of consciousness-crises can be best seen in the novels of Julian Barnes and Jan McEwan. They created the artistic archaeology of identity, both following the path created by the French philosopher Michel Foucault. In his novel Archeologie du savoir, but mainly in Herméneutique du sujet Foucault deals with the relationship of cognition and the cognitive subject. He intends to create a firm epistemological base to "dealing with ourselves". In his novel Flaubert’s Parrot Barnes and in Saturday McEwan gives an excellent example of ethno-cultural conflicts and identity-crises. The study deals separately with the mythic and social background, stylistic and poetic characteristics of McEwen’s novel. From the point of view of the content problems negative consequences of the achievement-cult are highlighted. The main figure faces the tragic dilemma of reforming his self-knowledge.
