  • Subiect: The Protest by the Romanian Culture League in Bruxelles in 1897 In the summer of 1897, during the wo1·ks of the Interparliamentary Conference of peace and of the Universal Exhibition, both lodged by the capital of Belgium, a booklet in French containing the „Protestation des Romains de Transylvania et de Hongrie contre l'oppression magyare” has been delivered to the delegations, people and newspapermen. It was a document drew up by the leaders of the Romanians from Transylvania. covered with more than 2.000 signatures, translated into French and spread in Brussels by the Romanian students from there. members of the section of the Cultural League (an organization created in Bucharest at 24 January 1891 and having for an object the creation of the cultural unity of all Romanians, including those from the historical provinces under the foreign domination). The Protest was a survey of the critical situation of the Romanian population from Transylvania after the „Memorandum", „trial that attracted the general attention of the whole civilized world. The authors produced indubitable proofs on the millenary continuity and existence of the Romanian people in the „birth space", comprised between the Carpathians and the Danube. They asked from the part of the authorities of the dualist Austrian-Hungarian state equal political rights for the Romanian population of Transylvania.
