Icoana pe sticlă, oglindă a multiculturalităţii transilvane

  • Subiect: ln contrast with other Romanian lands where the iconography followed constantly the established Byzantine models and techniques, the glass icon approached sometimes nuances of the multi-cultural Transylvanian area, filtered through the sensibility and expression modalities of the local artist. A complex iconography theme is "The mirror of the inner man", whose origins can be found in "the moral paintings" used by French Catholic missionaries of the 18th century. These representations penetrated into the Transylvanian area through the Western prints and engravings. They were alsa known through the woodcuts of the book "The Mirror of the Man", a success of pious literature in Romanian countries in the 19th century. Approached in glass icon painting, this was a common theme for Transylvanian Christian confessions at the time.
