Stolnicul Constantin Cantacuzino, boier-cărturar

  • Subiect: The High-Steward Constantin Cantacuzino, a Scholar-Boyar The High-Steward Constantin Cantacuzino was born in 1639, in Târgovişte, as a member of one of the newest and strongest families from Wallachia and the Balkans. Since his adolescence he loved books. He was both an intellectual and a politician. Due to him the number of books of the library of his family from Mărgineni Monastery increased considerably. He brought there over 3.000 books. He also brought to Walachia the first atlases with information about America and about the culture of the 17th century. As a cartographer he drew one of the best maps of Wallachia in 1700. He sustained the progress of the printing in Walachia. In 1688 he was one of those who helped the publishing of the Bible in the Romanian language. In 1683, he and his brother, the prince Şerban Cantacuzino, contributed to the opening of the Lordly Academy in Bucharest, which was the first institution situated at the same level with the Fine Arts Faculty from the Western Europe. His work Istoria Ţării Româneşti, brought a new working method in the Romanian historiography, i.e. that of the positive reading of the historical sources. Thus he was the first person who rose against the unfriendly writings regarding the Romanian people. Due to all these things, the HighSteward Constantin Cantacuzino contributed to the progress of the spirituality and the acknowledgement of the Romanian humanism in Europe.
