Aşezarea Sîntana de Mureş-Cerceachov de la Negrileşti (jud. Galaţi)(I)

  • Subiect: In 1981, the archaeologist Nicu Mircea, at that time director of the Mixed Museum of Tecuci, proceeded to an archaeological survey on the banks of Barlad river. On that occasion, he also carried on a surface research that led to the delineating of several areas of archaeological interest, both in the schoolyard and in the gardens on the high terrace of Barlad river. Within that area, archaeological vestiges from various historical ages were discovered, such as remains pertaining to Cris culture, a double inhumation tomb pertaining to Noua culture, a pottery oven dating from the IV-th century AD and also items of pottery from the Middle Age. Between 2007 and 2012 several campaigns of archaeological researches were carried on at various points of the site, the discoveries confirming the intense habitation on the actual territory of Negrilesti village, during all the historical ages mentioned above. The six archaeological campaigns carried on in Negrilesti revealed 8 dwellings pertaining to Santana de Mures – Cernjachov culture, 6 of them being surface dwellings and 2 pit-hut dwellings. Inside the dwellings or near them, the researches revealed several hearths, pottery ovens or heating ovens and some sewage pits. Three ovens, situated within the habitation complex, were investigated; one of them was situated inside a dwelling and the other two outside. Within the dwellings or in their close proximity, 17 pits were discovered and investigated; on the basis of their content, they were ascribed to Santana de Mureş – Cernjachov culture. Although the archaeological researches in Negrilesti are only at their beginning, the results accomplished so far allow some conclusions. The area has been intensely inhabited from Neolithic until our days, having proper conditions for living as a result of its proximity to Barlad river. We hope that the future campaigns will succeed in revealing all the dwelling complexes situated on this site so that we may get a detailed picture of the intensity of habitation of this area.
