Consideraţii asupra unor aspecte ale legăturilor voievodatului ardelean cu imperiul bizantin (mijlocul sec. X - începutul sec. XI)

  • Subiect: CONSIDERATIONS UPON SOME ASPECTS REGARDING THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TRANSYLVANIAN PRINCIPALITY AND THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE (BY THE MIDDLE OF THE 10th CENTURY THE BEGINNING OF THE 11™ CENTURY) In the middle of the 10th century, in the context of an intense Byzantine action concerning the Hungarians' evangelization and their drawing into the sphere of influence of Constantinople, a new inter-carpathian politica) entity, ruled by the Magyar ruler, Gylas, christianized in Eastern rite in Byzantium (948 / 953 or 956), establishes politica) and religious relationships with the Byzantine Empire. On politica) plane, the relations between the two parts materialized by including the inter-carpathian politica) entity into the system the suzerain-vassal relations promoted by the Byzantine Empire. On religious plane, the Byzantine authorities took action în two direction: the evangelization of the pagan population from the area and the organization of the local Church, for the purpose that, on the territories ruled by Gylas, an Orthodox Bishopric, dependent on the Ecumenica) Patriarchate, led by the bishop Hierotheos, of Greek origin, invested in Constantinople, who, most likely, in his position of "Bishop of Hungary", he will have exerted his religious jurisdiction upon all the christians of Eastern rite from the territories ruled by Hungarians. The relations between the inter-carpathian politica) entity and the Byzantium ended up violently at the beginning of the l ltl1 century, due to the hostility existing between the duke Gylas the Young and the king of Hungary, Stephen I. In I 001- 1002, the king of Hungary attacked the Transylvanian ruler, defeated him and took him prisoner to Hungary. As a result of the Hungarian victory, the level of dependence of the Transylvanian political entity on Hungary increased, without getting to an integration of the Transylvanian Principality into the administrative and political) structures of the Arpadian (Hungarian) Kingdom.
