Greco-catolicii sătmăreni la sfârşitul veacului al XVIII-lea

  • Subiect: The Romanian-Ukrainian community from Satu Mare is dating from at least the middle of the XVIIth century, when the documents mention it in town. This year 320 years passed since may the first 1690 when a part of Romanian and Ukrainian priests from Satu Mare County switched to Greek-Catholicism, recognizing the Pope as leader of the church. In May 4 1690 Greek-Catholics from Satu Mare (Romanian and Ukrainian) have consecrated their first wooden church, built in the so called Mintiu part of the town and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Over the XVIIIth century the community has flourished; many years later, in 1792, reaching at 1343 souls, representing 17% of the town population. The census which we publish unfortunately refers only at the Satu Mare area of the town, leaving out the ones from Mintiu. We can notice that a number of 66 persons (9%) were considered citizens with full rights (cives); a second category, residents, counting 198 souls (27%) and the last category- cottars (inquilini) representing 17%.
