He was the promotor of research of Dacian numismatics and the Medieval numismatics of Transylvania and author of the mains works in this field published in Romania in the last 30 years. He searched with the up-to-date methods the monetary circulation in the period prior to the Roman conquest. He was the initiator of the research on Medieval coins in Transylvania, working out methods of research and a system of publishing in this field. He also carried out the research work in the field of Roman and Late Roman numismatics, the results of this research being published in some important works. As an archaeologist Eugen Chirilă belonged to the generation of archaeologists who abandoned the romantic way of research, tackling the archaeological site with topographical methods. He took part in the excavations carried out at the most important sites of Transylvania of the years 1950-1991, being chief of excavations at some important ones in Transylvania (Buciumi, Bologa, Romita, Marca, Moigrad). Wherever he worked the results of this research where materialized in archaeological monographs (Buciumi, Marca, Moigrad). All these place him among the protagonists of the Romanian archaeological research. Besides his research work he was much concerned in the teaching of younger generation of scholars, unfortunately not in the University, there was not welcomed owing to his anticommunist attitude, but by direct collaboration. A considerable number of younger researchers owe their scientific tuition and subsequent development to him.
