Volfgang Cserey ca botatist şi grădina sa botanică din Crasna

  • Subiect: Voldgang Cserey as a Botanist and His Botanical Garden from Crasna Volfgang Cserey junior (1773-1842), a remarkable personality of the culture of his time, inscribed his name in the history of natural sciences owing to his botanical studies. About 1800 he settled down in Crasna, the center of his domain, and here he created a beautiful botanical garden. Having good connections with the botanists from the Western Europe, he obtained, either by change or for money, rare plants from the botanical gardens of Berlin, Paris, Dresden, Vienna and Prague. The plants gathered by Cserey, the number of which raised up to some thousands, were planted in the garden according to Linne's system. The exotic plant, some originating so far as in Brazil, were cultivated in greenhouses. Wishing to spread this new science on a wider scale, the amateur botanist Cserey planned the setting up of botanical garden near schools. So, with the plants, originating from the rich garden from Crasna, was set up the botanical garden of the Reformed College from Cluj in 1807 and it still existed after 1813. Cserey made the same offers to the colleges from Târgu Mureş, Debrecen and Sárospatak, but without lasting results. Cserey's studies in the domain of botany were left in manuscript. Their majority served to present new industrial plants. At the beginning of 19th century the botanical garden from Crasna, enriched with such great enthusiasm by Cserey, became a scientific institution, with through its founder's ardor influenced positively the propagation of botanica1 science in Transylvania and Hungary.
