Duel de opinii: Iuliu Maniu - generalul Ion Antonescu în problema atitudinii faţă de masacrele din Transilvania ocupată - septembrie 1940

  • Subiect: A Duel of Opinions Between Iuliu Maniu and General Ion Antonescu in the Question of Massacres in the Occupied Transylvania in September 1940 In the autumn of 1940 Romania was in a very critical political and military situation: a. a part of its national territory was abducted either through political dictate (Northern Transylvania to Hungary), or through military ultimate (Basarabia to Soviet Union) or under the great fascist powers (Southern Dobrogea to Bulgaria); b. the monarchy was highly compromised; c. Romania became a fascist state enrolled in the war on Germany's side In this situation Iuliu Maniu, the leader of the National Peasant Party (suspended that time) started to prepare a meeting of protest in Bucharest against the nonobservance of stipulations of international behavior in the occupied territories and against the massacres carried off by the Hungarian army in the occupied territories in northern Transylvania in September 1940. The author publishes three letters: a. a petition of Iuliu Maniu to the Ministry of Internal Affairs asking the permission to organize this meeting; b. the answer of the fascist statesman Ion Antonescu to this petition; c. Iuliu Mania’s answer the renunciation to organize the meeting. Two opinions are clearly defined: one to the Romanian (Transylvanian) patriot Iuliu Maniu, who required the respecting of international conventions in protecting the oppressed Romanian population in the occupied territories : the other of a fascist statesman who under the masque of superior interests tried to explain that a popular protest against Hungarian crimes would anger the allies (Germany, Italy) and would compromise the current diplomatic treaties, in other words, it did not suit the power's convenience.
