Stabilirea armenilor în Transilvania şi înfiinţarea oraşelor Armenopolis şi Elisabethopolis / The settlement of the Armenians in Transylvania and the establishment of the cities of Armenopolis and Elisabethopolis

  • Subiect: The present study tries to present a complex historical phenomenon – the exodus of the Armenians settled in the Romanian Principalities during the 10th-11th centuries, especially the massive migration of Armenians from Moldavia to Transylvania at the end of the 17th century and the events that generated it. In 1700, respectively in 1733, Armenians from Transylvania established the cities of Armenopolis and Elisabethopolis. Because of their exceptional skills in crafts and mercantile activities, the Armenians were considered indispensable for the commercial network of the Principality of Transylvania, thus obtaining several rights and privileges, which led to the development of the two cities. At the end of the 18th century Armenopolis and Elisabethopolis were given, by the Austro-Hungary Monarchy, the status of „Free Royal Cities”.
