Circulaţia monetară la Cetatea Severinului (secolele XIII-XVI) / The monetary circulation at Severin fortress during de 13th-16th centuries.

  • Subiect: The paper deals with 241 coins discovered at the Fortress of Severin during the archaeological excavations from 1965-1969 and 1988. The coins were all listed beginning with those issued in Wallachia by Vlaicu (1364-1377), Radu I (1377¬1383), Dan I (1383-1386), Mircea the Old (1386-1418), Radu the Handsome (about 1462-1475). Among them there are some rare pieces as: bani (obols), issued by Dan I and Vlad the Devil and the ducat issued by Radu the Handsome. The other coins discovered there are struck in Bulgaria, Serbia, the Ottoman Empire, Hungary and Bohemia. The analysis of the coins found at Fortress of Severin allows to draw some economic, political and military conclusions. The presence of the coins prove that the Fortress of Severin was built at the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century. It had a quite large and prosperous rural settlement around, strongly involved in the trade with the regions South of the Danube. After the foundation of the Wallachian feudal state and after its independence obtained in 1330, this town belonged to Wallachia, a fact well confirmed by the great number of coins issued by the Wallachian princes.
