  • Subiect: This paper presents the coins discovered at Piua-Petrii (Oraşul de Floci), during the archaeological excavations made in 1993 and 1994. There is a short review of the numismatic medieval material that included treasures or isolated pieces discovered in that place. The coins were issued in different countries, by a great number of rulers. Also the denomination are very varied. There are to be found silver coins such as quartings, dinars, aspers, groats, 3 groats and thalers. There are also gold imitations after a Venetian zecchino issued in the name of Domenico Contarini, doge of Veneţia (1659-1675). From the chronological point of view, the pieces discovered at Piua Petrii cover a period of about 5 centuries. The oldest one is a quarting issued between 1430-1437 by Sigismund I (1384-1437) and the most recent is a "para" issued by Mahmmud II (1808-1839). They come from many countries and mints: Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Poland, Lithuania, the Holly Roman Empire, Ragusa, a.s.o. The archaeological excavations from 1993 (13 coins found) and 1994 (22 coins) had as result the discovery of some common coins - Ottoman, aspers and Hungarian dinars. Beside them, some coins of a peculiar structure were also found. We point out a ducat issued on Wallachia by Vladislav II (AD 1448-1456), a Russian denga - an issue struck between 1533-1547 by the tzar Ivan IV Vasilievitch (1533-1584) and a fragment of a forged Ottoman dirham Issued in the 16th century. It was emphasized the historical and numismatic importance, of the coin of Vladislav II. It is a rare coin, a unique discovery in the Eastern part of Wallachia. There are also discussed the other coins with short information regarding their presence there as well as their historic signification. The great number of coins discovered on a rather limited area, as well as their variety prove the importance of the town Oraşul de Floci, both as custom point and important commercial center.
