Nicolae Ceausescu în filatelie şi numismatică / Nicolae Ceaşescu in Philately and Numismatics

  • Subiect: The article presents how the cult of personality evolved and was reflected in philately and numismatics during the last decade of Ceauşescu’s epoch. First of all, the author points out the differences between Ceauşescu’s regime and that of his predecessor. Unlike Ceauşescu, Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej did not have stamps printed with his effigy. By describing the type of stamps, which were printed with the communist president's effigy, the author shows how the cult of personality reached its highest peak in the 198os. There is a common trait that, in general, communist leaders avoided putting their effigies on coins, with some exceptions: Klement Gotwald, Fidel Castro, Kim Ir Sen and Iosip Broz Tito. The author suggests that the Korean and the Yugoslavian models, quite likely, inspired the coin projects bearing Ceauşescu’s effigy. However, these projects never took shape.
