Istrian Autonomous Coins from the Ion Donoiu Collection / Monede autonome histriene din colecţia Ion Donoiu

  • Subiect: In the Coin Room Collection of the National History Museum of Romania the collection of a well-known Greek and Byzantine numismatics aficionado, Ion Donoiu is kept. In this study, there are presented a number of 31 Greek coins from his collection, most of them minted at Histria, which evoke through their characteristics a whole issue of the autonomous history of the city. Regarding their provenience, it was impossible to recover information about the finding place, but by analyzing the state of conservation, it can be deduced that these are isolated findings, which have circulated a long period on the Dobroudja territory. These are arrowheads preserved in different shapes (no. 1-3), bronze coins of different values casted with the wheel (no. 4-5); issues of type Istros, an older one and a more recent coin (no. 6-7); Demeter type coins issued between 250-200 B.C. (no. 8-10), some of them being marked with a circular countermark of 9.5 × 12.2 mm, with Athena’s head wearing a helmet with panache oriented to the right. These coins are followed by the type Demeter coins dating from the 1st century B.C., from the magistrates XAI, ΔIO, XAIPE and AYΣ (no. 11-22), which are usually marked with circular countermarks of approximatively 6 mm, with the radiant head of Helios, frontal representation or/and with the head of Hermes with petasos, oriented to the right. Exceptionally, there have also been identified other countermarks: a star with six rays (?), of approximatively 6 mm; the laureate head of Apollo oriented to the right of approximatively 6.8 mm (no. 19), an oval countermark, of 9 × 12 mm, with the veiled head of Demeter oriented to the right, in combination with a punch of 6.6 × 10.5 mm, with a cornucopia, oriented to the left (no. 20); a circular countermark of approximatively 9 × 10.3 mm with an eagle on a dolphin, oriented to the left (no. 21-22). In the study catalogue, there are also presented older issues of type Apollo type coins, dating from the years 250-200 B.C. (no. 23-25), on the last of them being punched a circular countermarked of 6.7 × 8 mm, with the laureate head of Apollo, oriented to the right. Also, there are also described Apollo type coins dating from the 1st century B.C. issued by XAIPE and MONI magistrates (no. 26-30), countermarked with usual punch tools of approximatively 6 mm, from those times: the frontal radiate head of Helios and the one with the head of Hermes with petasos, oriented to the right. The last one was marked only with a circular countermark of 9.3 mm, with an eagle on a dolphin, oriented to the left. In the end, a bronze coin is presented issued by Lysimach (306-281 B.C.), countermarked in Istros sometime between 280-270 B.C., with a circular countermark of 12.3 × 12.8 mm with „ ΙΣΤΡΙ/an eagle with his wings closed on a dolphin, oriented to the left” (no. 31).
