Practicile magice în satul din zona Maramureşului istoric. Studiu de caz: meşteroaia.

  • Subiect: The belief in and the practice of magic has been present since the dawn of humanity and continues to have an important and medicinal role in many cultures today. Some scholars believe that the nature of witchcraft is a Christian projection. Maramureş, enclosed by mountains, is a less accessible area, and therefore quite protected from outside influences. Here has existed in popular belief the concept of white sorcery which is considered rather benevolent. This type of benefic magic was accepted by the people and even tolerated or not opposed by the orthodox establishment. However the magic workers were still Viewed ambivalently by communities, and were considered as capable ofharming as ofhealing. This is the case of Ana Herbil, regarded by many as the mast capable sorceress in this part of Romania who claimed her powers to be emanate from the Devii. In Maramureş as in other parts of Europe the sorceresses were stereotypically women, asin folklore and popular superstition. One of the mast obvious characteristic of a witch is to cast a speli that could consists of a set of words, a formula or a verse, a ritual combination or any combination of these. They are alsa very skilled in using medicinal herbs as parts of traditional healing. From this point of view they acted more as witch doctors who had remedies to protect others against malicious magic, the cause for disease, sickness in animals, bad luck sudden death and other misfortunes, and a mediator between the mundane and spiritual worlds. Magic workers in al! periods of history have sought to tap the mysterious forces of the uni verse and to utilize these powers to his own purposes - whether for good or evil. Such intentions /ie at the very heart of al! forms of magic.
