Aplicaṭii ale ştiinṭei materialelor în evaluarea artefactelor din patrimoniul cultural

  • Subiect: By its complexity, materials science corroborates besides the preparation methods and investigative techniques for many of the materials currently used in human society. However, this scientific branch is particularly important in the materials used in the past humanity, offering important informations on material composition and manufacturing techniques that have marked human existence, some of the reference value for the further development of mankind. In this context, it particularly important to consider the analysis of cultural heritage artefacts, especially for defining the direction of conservation and restoration of museums and art collections. Modern methods of investigation provides useful informations about the history and artifacts surveyed their conservation status. Since aging processes often involve chemical reactions that induce the degradation of the artifact compounds, is necessary to analyze the possible chemical degradation pathways of various materials, useful for developing effective methods for preserving them from further deterioration. The paper aims to present a study case (resulting from investigations artifacts in our laboratories), composition, structure and characterization of artifacts from Romania cultural heritage, in museums or private collections: paper (books), samples of ceramic tiles (tiles Transylvania and various pieces of ceramic), archaeological buildings (chalk). Will be presented the results achieved by the following spectroscopic techniques (UV-VIS, FTIR, XRD, EDXRF), Raman, ICP-AES, chromatographic techniques (GC-MS) thermo-analytical techniques (DSC, TGA), microscopic investigations ( MO, SEM, AFM) for the samples from the above-mentioned series. Scientific investigations of an artifact from the cultural heritage must be accepted by museum curator, archaeologist, conservator and restorer, and as far as possible, their analysis to be performed by non-destructive techniques and surface analysis to be harmless. Without these procedures of scientific investigations, there is a risk of an incorrect restoration, resulting in disfigurement or deterioration of an artifact.
