Bucureşti – locuri şi oameni – după cutremurătoarea noapte din 4 martie 1977

  • Subiect: The earthquake that occurred on March 4th 1977, at 21:22, lasting between 55 and 56 seconds and with a magnitude of 7.2 degrees on the Richter scale, had an impact over the city of Bucharest as well as nine other counties in Romania, representing the most tragic event of its kind from the postbellum period. The Romanian Capital suffered significant damage due to the earthquake’s intensity and duration, causing immense human and material loss. Officially 1.391 deaths and 7.576 injured were recorded, 32 apartment buildings collapsed and approximately 150 four or more stories-high buildings were considerably damaged. During the earthquake, a number of important figures of Romanian culture lost their lives, such as actor Toma Caragiu, film director Alexandru Bocăneţ, poet and writer Anatol E. Baconsky, critic and literary historian Mihai Gafiţa, and writers Viorica Porumbacu and Mihail Petroveanu. Among the representative city-centre buildings which were destroyed by the natural disaster of March 4th we point out the apartment buildings of Scala, Casata, Colonadelor-Continental, Mica-Nestor etc.
