Vestigii din epoca avară descoperite la Nuşfalău „Corlate” (Sălaj county)

  • Subiect: AVAR AGE VESTIGES DISCOVERED AT NUŞFALĂU “CORLATE” (SĂLAJ COUNTY) The artifacts presented in this paper were discovered in the „Corlate” area of the modern town of Nuşfalău, to the north-east of the village, on the left side of the Corlate Valley. In 2010 the owners of a private bed and breakfast situated in this location wanted to extend their investment to the right side of a stream in the Corlate Valley; thus, archaeological surveys were carried out. These surveys, in several areas (marked with the letters A, B, C, D, F, see figure 4) situated around the original complex (the B&B and two fishing pools), resulted in the discovery of pottery fragments and nine metallic artifacts (8 made out of bronze, and 1 made out of iron). The artifacts discovered at this site can be placed within a rather broad chronological framework (7th century/ 2nd half of the 7th century – early/first half of the 9th century); thus, throughout the middle horizon (670–710/720) and later horizon (710/720–810/830) of the Avar Khaganate. Unfortunately, there is no clear information or pieces of evidence regarding the exact character of the settlement of Nuşfalău “Corlate” (1. Cemetery, 2. Settlement, 3. Cemetery and Settlement). This image would definitely change if a full archaeological investigation was carried out, potentially revealing more information about this site.
