Practici vestimentare în Ţara Românească la începutul secolului al XIX-lea

  • Subiect: The Fashion in Walachia in the Beginning of the 19th Century The juridical status of Walachia was determined in the 16th century from its affiliation to the “House of Peace” (dâr al ‘ahad), somewhere between the “House of war” and the “House of Islam”, meaning that Walachia maintained its political autonomy: not in war with the Ottoman Empire and no Islam law on its territory. But this autonomy was limited starting from 1716 until 1821 when the ottomans named as rulers of the Romanian country Greeks from Constantinople. Through these Greeks the oriental fashion will have a great influence in the lives of the Romanians. They will adopt the oriental beauty ideal with outsized bodies, overlapped loose-fitting clothes, sharovaries, suitable to their physical inactivity and to their custom to sit down on Turkish pillows. Therefore, the bodies of the rulers and nobles from Walachia became imposing and heavy.
