Archaelogical rescue excavations on the south slope of Chilli Hill in Vărădia Village, Caraş-Severin County

  • TITLU în română: Săpături arheologice de salvare pe versantul sudic al dealului Chilli din satul Vărădia, judeţul Caraş-Severin
  • Subiect: „In July 2007, on Chilii Hill, situated near the village of Vărădia, in close proximity of the Roman Fort (listed among the major monuments and archaeological sites in Romania), there has been mechanically created an earth platform at approximately 50m south of the earth-built Roman camp. The area affected summarizes 5700m2, having several drops in the natural slope of the hill, drops that measure between 0,50m and 1m (Fig. 1). By removing the luxuriant greenery from the surface and excavating the platforms, the ancient and prehistoric levels have been brutally tempered with. At a glance, dwellings, cesspools and provision holes from the first Iron Age have been identified. There have also been identified foundations from Roman Age dwellings. A remarkable quantity of proto-dacian and roman sherds has been collected (provision pots, pans, kettles, amphorae etc.), as well as a Roman sesterce emited by emperor Augustus.”
