Un triunghi neobişnuit: profesorul Nicolae Iorga şi studenţii Ilie Cătărău şi Gheorghe Cotenescu

  • Subiect: An Unusual Triangle: Professor Nicolae Iorga and Students Ilie Catarau and Gheorghe Cotenescu This study reveals some aspects of the life of two Romanian students members of Professor Nicolae Iorga’s close entourage, Ilie Catarau and Gheorghe Cotenescu, before the Great War. Posing as a nationalist student caring for the underprivileged Romanians of Transylvania, Ilie Catarau, a Bessarabian, committed two terrorist bomb attacks on two iconic symbols of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire located in Brasov and Debrecen. In 1917, he was heavily involved in the struggle for power in Bessarabia, barely escaping alive. He became a lonely wanderer, returning to Romania both before and during the communist regime. The study gives a detailed account of how theologian Gheorghe Cotenescu’s life crossed at certain moments the path of Ilie Catarau’s amazing life without any knowledge of the latter’s true intentions.
