Din relaţiile domnului Constantin Vodă Brâncoveanu cu ţarul Petru I cel Mare

  • Subiect: On the Relationships Between Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu and Tsar Peter I The Great The prince's uncle, Seneschal Constantin Cantacuzino, reorganised the chancellery of the country according to modern standards. The seneschal brought, from the times of his brother, prince Şerban Cantacuzino, people who could write in all major languages of Europe and Near East. He maintained an extensive correspondence with the Posolsky Prikaz, headed by Artamon Sergeyevich Matveyev, count Feodor Alekseyevich Golovin and count Gavriil Ivanovich Golovkin. Furthermore, letters were being exchanged with Ukrainian nationalist hetmans Ivan Mazepa and Pylyp Orlyk. Several times, the correspondence was in code. Through his chancellery, Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu directly took part in the exchange of letters with Tsar Peter I. Although the two never actually met, they maintained, for a long time, cordial relationships through letters. The Tsar defended spathar Mihail Cantacuzino when the latter was dismissed by Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu. In 1711, during the battle of Stănileşti on the Prut river (7/18 – 11/22 July 1711), Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu stood waiting. The Tsar was defeated by the Sublime Porte. Under those circumstances, prince Constantin Brâncoveanu was accused of treason by both the Tsarist Empire and the Sublime Porte. This hastened his end.
