O hartă din secolul al XVI-lea între intervenţie empirică şi restaurare

  • Subiect: A Map from the 16th Century Between Empirical Intervention and Restoration In this article it is presented a 16th century map named Landtofel des Ungerland l’Bolocnda / Reussen / Littaw Walachen und Bulgaren by Sebastian Munster (1488 – 1552). The map is a woodcut engraving, uncoloured, very fragile and it presents an inactive microbial presence. After the presentation of its deterioration stage, we can begin with the steps of restauration. The restoration began with the removal of the cardboard, which had acid PH, from the back of the map by moisturising it and making it thinner, layer by layer, until total removal of the cardboard from the map. The next steps are the moisturised cleaning, the neutralization of the paper, the consolidation of possible cracks and thinner areas with Japanese tissue and covering the missing parts with Japanese paper. After the completion of the map, it is doubled, on the back, with a thicker layer of Japanese tissue (16 mg). When the restauration is finished, the map got a unitary look and an improved breaking strength of the paper.
