Raport preliminar privind cercetările arheologice preventive de la Timişoara - Castelul Huniade 2007

  • Subiect: „Due to the restoration of Castel Huniade, monument building, in 2007 preventive archeological excavations were undertaken. Other researches were made in 1903, with the occasion of brace works needed at that time. In 1980 archaeologist A. Rădulescu excavated in the NV area. In 2007 our research pointed the outer space of the building, namely the eastern side. In two tranches measuring 3 x 10 and 3 x 22 m, traced by the NE tower and the SE bastion, we excavated the earthen-wooden fortification of the castle. We succeded in identifying several phases of construction, dating from the XVI-XVIIth centuries. In tranch 1, near the NE tower, we believe we discovered the structure of a wood bridge over the river Timiş. A bridge placed in this area is represented on Austrian maps as well. During our excavations we collected many pottery fragments, dating from the XV-XVI centuries, as well as Ottoman glazed pottery. Also we discovered several cannon balls, made of bronze, iron and stone, fragments of knives, smoking pipes etc. In this phase of the researches we cannot draw up in details the plan of the fortification that surrounded the castle. Therefore it is very important to continue the excavations on the other sides of the castle and in the interiors as well.”
