Cultul eroilor militari reflectat în monumentele Războiului de Independenţă din Regatul României 1877-1918

  • Subiect: The cult of military heroes that have fallen in the Independence Wat from 1877-1878 has shaped the public space of the Romanian Kingdom into a place of commemoration, celebration and ritual dedicated to the memory of the victims and their accomplished goal, the independence of the country on the 9lh of May 1877 and the proclamation of the Kingdom on 14th of March 1881. In the 30 years from 1877 to 1918, more than 80 monuments were erected both in towns (15%) and particularly in villages (85%) in a constant rhythm over the years. The public expression of this cult is a singular one in Europe due to the large number of monuments and the fact that they cover the entire Romanian space. The cult originates from the initiatives of associations and its financial support comes from the public with only one exception, the Independence Monument in Craiova inaugurated in 1912, that was built out of the state's initiative and funding. As a coherent phenomenon, the cult of soldiers who have died in the Independence War was not coordinated by the state, nor by a central office; it rose from rural areas towards the large cities defining the national solidarity of the whole Romanian society, in an aesthetic shape that will only appear in other European states after the First World War.
