Tezaurul monetar roman imperial Apulum I restudiat

  • Subiect: We have tried to make a new study, by modern methods, of the Apulum I coin hoard which nowadays is lost. This hoard was found in 1867 at Alba Iulia, in the ruins of the palace of the prince of Transylvania's prince, in the South-West corner of the fortress of the XIII legion Gemina, the Romano--Catholic Bishopric residence today, The hoard was found in a lidded jar and from the amount of 700 imperial Roman coins there were recovered and examined a number of 612 coins (610 imperial Roman denarii and 2 drachmae). It was studied by Henrik Finaly in 1872, who published its catalogue, but due to the scientific level of the time he didn't give an interpretation to the hoard. At the same time he determined only 598 coins, from 612 (he used H. Cohen's catalogue, first edition, outdated today). The publication of a modern catalogue - RIC - allowed us to re-examine this hoard and to make a new catalogue where all the retrieved coins are determined. The hoard seems to have been hidden little after 185 A. D., when the latest coin of it is dated. We tried t0 find analogies with the other contemporary coin hoards discovered in Dacia (Butăieşti, Drăghiceni I, Dumbrăvioara, Poiana Sărată and Lujerdiu) using the same criteria. From the analysis data we could conclude that it was hidden in Commodus' time and not later. Its accumulation point out that the coins hoard Apulum I was collected relatively fast, during two generations, beginning in Trajan's reign. It doesn't belong to any known line of related discoveries in the Roman camp administration and its hiding is due only to personal reasons.
