Monumentele funerare cu imaginea sfinxului din Dacia romană

Subiect: The article studies the funerary monuments with the image of the Sphinx from Roman Dacia. There are 27 such monuments, discovered at Alba Iulia-9, Gârbova (Alba county)-1, Gilău (Cluj county)-1, Roşia Montană-2, Sarmizegetusa-12, Suatu (Cluj county)-1, Zlatna-1, unknown origin-1. We consider that this image had the following symbolic values for the inhabitants of the Roman Dacia: symbol of the greedy death, who kidnaps the people; symbol of the time's passage and of the fear caused by that; defender of the grave, who drives away the evil spirits; sign of faith in a mythological after-world, such as described by Vergil in the 6th book of the Aeneid.
