Servii din Transilvania şi comitatele învecinate pe parcursul secolului al XIII-lea

  • Subiect: In this article I attempted to present in a general way the situation of the slaves (servi) of Transylvania and the neighbouring counties (from south to north: Caraş, Timiş, Arad, Cenad, Zarand, Bihor, Sătmar, Crasna, Middle-Solnoc and Maramureş) during the 13th century, territories which today are wholly or mostly part of Romania. In choosing this topic I took into account the fact that the Romanian historiography did not pay attention to the subject of medieval slaves. To accomplish this, I used the edited medieval documents that included references to various aspects regarding the slaves. Being a very generous subject, I only touched the main issues, such as: the terms in which the slaves were designated in medieval charters; which was their status in the laws of the Hungarian Kingdom and how were they seen by the society; which were the ways to become a slave; sales, purchases, exchanges, donations and legacies of slaves; the redemption of the freedom of slaves, and the reasons that led to the liberation of many slaves by their masters; the disappearance of the servi. The main conclusion is that – similar to the rest of the Hungarian Kingdom and other European countries – in Transylvania there was a group of population who was seen and treated like slaves, even if this issue was not researched and directly admitted by the Romanian researchers of medieval history.
