Mari incendii în istoria oraşului Bistriţa

  • Subiect: The article makes an inventory of the most disastrous fires in Bistriţa, describing the causes, the propagation mode and the consequences of these events. Most of the fires that affected the city were due to the presence of buildings from flammable materials, their density and the existence of potential fire sources in homes and workshops. Once erupted, many of them expanded very quickly, especially in drought and winds. Therefore, the administrations paid particular attention to preventive measures. “In the tower of the curch all the time, day and night, there must be two guards to supervise. If a fire broke out in the city, God forbid us, we must warn the people by blowing the horns and the red military flag is to be placed on the tower, in the direction of the fire, than the bell should start tolling, so that the men take control of the situation and to act” was stipulated in the Defense and Warning Regulation of 1590. For the prevention of fires The Urbanism Regulations of 1888 and 1913 prohibit the use of flammable materials, insulating by making blind walls and application of clay layers over wooden ceilings and it is forbidden to build wooden outbuildings in the perimeter of the historic city and to replace the roof coverings with fire resistant materials. In 1874 the Association of Volunteer Firefighters was established. The first captain of the Association was Johann Siegler, mayor of the city. The fire of June 11, 2008, when the scaffolding on the tower of the Evangelical Church, which was under restoration, set on fire, led to the destruction of the tower, the melting of the bells and of the clock. Perceived as a heavy loss for the city, the event solidified the community and intensified the efforts to restore and renovate the monument.
