Izvoare epigrafice privind drumurile din Dacia romană

  • Subiect: The present paper deals with some aspects regarding the analysis of the milestones from Roman Dacia. We have analyzed in our study three categories of epigraphic sources: 1. The Roman milestones, which are, in fact, the main category, if we think that, even their number is not big (9), comparing with other provinces, they are the sources that give exact informations concerning the date of construction of certain Roman roads; 2. Tabula Traiana, which is an inscription sculpted in the rock and inform us about the Roman road constructed by emperor Trajan in 100 A.D. at Cazane, close by the Danube; 3. The category of inscriptions concerning the journeys, which is formed for Dacia by two monuments: a votive inscription from Apulum and a votive altar from Băile Herculane. We divided the first category of sources, the milestones, in three parts, corresponding to the three provinces of Dacia. We have discussed first the situation of the three milestones from Dacia Porolissensis, located at Aiton, Mera and Almaşul Mare. The Roman road system from Dacia Superior is represented, epigraphically speaking, by the milestones from Micia and Lăpuşnicel. In Dacia Inferior we have four milestones, all of them discovered alongside the Via Alutana, at Băbiciu de Sus (Olt county), Gostavăţu (Olt county), Praetorium (Copăceni, village of Racoviţa, Vâlcea county) and Sucidava (Celei). So, we have chosen to divide this category after the provinces and also chronologically, for two reasons: 1. first of all, in order to systemize all the informations on Roman milestones; 2. to have the possibility to realize a contextual discussion, with direct reference to the general situation of the road system in the Roman Empire, in order to emphasize the role and the importance played by the roads from Roman Dacia. We presented and analyzed the three categories of inscriptions trying to utilize the epigraphic informations in the general context offered by the Roman road system.
