Contribuţii la reconstituirea reţelei rutiere din Dacia romană. Rolul şi importanţa toponimiei în cercetarea drumurilor antice

  • Subiect: The present paper deals with some aspects concerning the relationship between the toponymics as "Trajan's road", "Emperor's road", "the old road" and the Roman roads. We have demonstrated that obviously there is a relation between these toponymics, because all of them appear many times alongside Roman roads. When we study a problem related to Roman roads, it is necessary to use the information offered by the toponymics. The toponymy represents, in many situations, an important clue and the basis in the orientations of the terrain researches. The study of the Roman road system is based on the information of the written sources and the archaeological researches, but, especially when we hesitate to tell if a road is from the Roman period, we use the toponymics in order to identify and verify the conclusions of the researches or to elaborate new hypotheses. Defined as the totality of the name of localities, waters, mountains from a country as a region, and considered to be one of the most important parts of the linguistics, the toponymy became in time a discipline with major role in the historical researches. Alongside the ancient cartographic sources and the information from some medieval documents, the local traditions mentions in the territory of the former Dacia the presence of some toponymics with direct reference to the Roman roads.
