Iordanes şi gepizii. Între goticism, pangermanism şi Walter Goffart

  • Subiect: Recent archaeological discoveries in Transylvania have led to increase of the monuments dated in the V-VI century AD, consisting mainly of settlements and cemeteries belonging to the so-called Reihengräberkreis. Based on written records and the ethnic interpretation of archaeological remains, all these findings are interpreted as belonging to the Gepids. According to this historical reconstruction, for more than two centuries (454-680 A. D.), Transylvania was ruled, and, after 567 A. D., inhabited, by the Gepids nation. Current modern vision is that the Gepids are Eastern Germans, closely related to the Goths and Vandals, one of many „Gothic nations“. Because the “Germanicity” of most barbarian peoples mentioned in written sources in the Danube area (as Goths, Vandals, Gepids, Scyrians, Herulians) originate in the historical narratives of the time of Justinian (Jordanes and Procopius), emerges in the Renaissance through the “exaltation of the Goths’ (gothicism) and finds its final expression after the setting of the deutsche Altertumskunde and the pangermanist interpretations, we try to sketch a history of these moments form the view of the Gepids’ origin.
